Post-pregnancy makeovers at Medicetics
It’s not just our bodies that feel the impact of pregnancy, as any new mother will tell you.
Hormonal surges and the weight gain and loss, together with broken sleep following the birth can all take their toll on the complexion leaving the skin lacklustre, prone to break outs, dark circles and pigmentation. In response, Medicetics have developed a new MUMMY MAKEOVER programme designed to address the skin issues triggered by pregnancy and motherhood.
Pigmentation Hormone surges during pregnancy can lead to changes in pigmentation, or chloasma otherwise known as the ‘pregnancy mask.’ Unlike the swollen ankles and weight gain these changes do not disappear after the birth. Medicetics uses a programme of three to six ‘photofacials’ using IPL, or intense pulsed light, to address this issue. The photofacial laser emits a pulsed light. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the sunspots and converted to heat. The heat dissolves the pigment.
This is combined with the Obagi Nuderm system, a prescription-only skin programme for best results.
“Removing pigmentation problems can take years off your face. Studies show that clear skin is more important than symmetry when rating faces for attractiveness.” Dr. Dondos
Spider veins
Increased blood volume circulating during pregnancy puts pressure on the capillaries sometimes leading to ‘spider veins’ or small clusters of broken capillaries on the cheeks. These can be addressed in as little as just one session of IPL.
Gaunt Face
Post-pregnancy weight loss can lead to a gaunt look and sagging skin. Medicetics use tiny amounts of Botox to address furrowed brows, while restoring a youthful bounce with Voluma, a hyaluronic acid based injectable. Voluma is especially good at restoring volume to the cheeks – often the first to go in post-pregnancy weight loss - without leading to a false looking ‘pillow face’. Although it is structurally strong to last, it is soft and does not form lumps like some cheek volumisers. Voluma is a very specialised treatment currently performed by only a few doctors in the UK. As it is injected deeper it requires a good knowledge of facial anatomy to ensure safety and a good result.
Dry Skin and Acne
Dry, dull skin that often follows pregnancy is addressed with regular light peels for a fresher, brighter look. Skin peels use chemical exfoliants such as glycolic, salicylic and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to unglue dead skin cells and promote collagen regeneration, reducing fine lines, refining pores and improving skin texture.
Pregnancy hormones can encourage the production of sebum – the oil that keeps our skin supple – leading to blocked pores and spots. Light facial peels stimulate a very deep exfoliation, also addressing these issues.
