Skin Peels
What is a skin peel?
Skin peels use chemical exfoliants such as glycolic, salicylic and trichloroacetic acid- TCA. Medicetics Doctors use them to remove sun-damaged skin and stimulate its healthy re-growth in a controlled fashion. The resulting exfoliation removes dead cell layers and promotes underlying collagen regeneration to reduce fine lines, refine pores, correct uneven skin texture and improve acne, acne scarring, facial blemishes and pigmentation.
At Medicetics we offer several different kinds of skin peels in order to treat different skin tones and conditions.

How does a skin peel work?
A chemical solution (in the form of a clay mask, lotion or liquid) is applied to the skin to accelerate the removal of old, damaged skin cells at the surface of the skin and to promote new cell growth below. The solution can be used to treat a very specific area (such as lines around the eyes or mouth), or all over the face, arms, hands and neck.
Skin peels can take anything from just a few minutes to over thirty minutes, depending on the type of peel that you are having. Results obtained depend on the strength of the acid, the duration of contact with the skin and the type of acid used: all this will be discussed in detail during your consultation.
What are the different kinds of skin peel?
- Superficial 'Lunch-Time' Peel
- Medium Peels: TCA and combination treatments
Superficial 'Lunch-Time' Peels
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic and lactic acids and beta-hydroxy acids (BHA's) such as salicylic acid are an excellent treatment for dull, lifeless skin. These superficial peels treat the outer layer of the skin called the epidermis and mildly stimulate collagen formation in the uppermost part of the dermis.

- AHAs are often referred to as fruit acids derived from natural products such as sugar cane (glycolic peel), milk (lactic acid peel) citrus fruits and grapes
- At lower concentrations (less than 20%) mild exfoliation occurs in the outer epidermal layers. This concentration is typically found in products sold over the counter or used in beauty salons.
- GLOW peels use an increased concentration of acid with a deeper penetration (up to 70% glycolic acid or 5% salicylic acid). However, recovery time remains short, and usually only consists of some flaking and redness for a few days.
Medium peels: TCA's and combination treatments
Medium peels treat deeper layers of the skin (the dermis).
- Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is the preferred chemical for this type of peel. This powerful exfoliant, used at lower concentrations, causes just a few days of subtle redness and peeling. 1-2 treatments can really change the quality and colouring of your skin. This is a great treatment for significantly sun-damaged and spotted arms, chests, and neck.
- A peel combining higher concentrations of a few agents including TCA, salicylic and acetic acid can, in just a single treatment, have a dramatic effect on dark spots and fine lines. This peel gives the appearance of a mild sunburn and most patients experience light peeling over the week following the procedure.
What will happen during the treatment?
During your initial consultation, we will perform a full facial analysis and discuss in detail the proposed treatment plan and your cosmetic goals. With all types of peel you may need to use specified homecare products for a minimum of 2 weeks before your treatment, to prepare your skin and so optimise results.
The actual treatment takes approximately 20 minutes. A slight burning or stinging sensation may be felt during application but this usually subsides immediately once the solution is removed or neutralised - usually within 2 minutes. Your skin may feel a little tight for a couple of hours after the procedure.
How many treatments will I need?
Results of a superficial peel are temporary: an initial series of 6 treatments done at 2-3 week intervals is recommended to obtain the best results. After this, a maintenance treatment every 6-8 weeks will keep pores unclogged, control breakouts and dramatically enhance the overall texture and quality of your skin.
How safe is it?
Superficial and medium peels are considered very safe treatments. However, there are some associated risks, including infection, skin colour changes and scarring. The treated skin may appear darker or be tight or swollen for a time. You will need to avoid exposure to the sun for some time after your peel, but you will be given detailed information on this and other aftercare, depending on the strength of your peel.
All peels offered at Medicetics have been rigorously scientifically appraised and are considered the most medically-advanced products available. Several misconceptions have plagued the reputation of skin peels: much media-hype has been generated by disturbing images of deep-peel patients immediately post procedure. Deep-peels are one-off treatments with dramatic effects - but considerable downtime (up to 3 months in some people). Medicetics does not offer these treatments.
Post-treatment care
It is essential to completely avoid sun exposure for at least 48 hours post-treatment. A high SPF is recommended on an ongoing basis to maintain results. You will be back to work or play immediately after our superficial peels.
